Preserve History, Honor Legacy: Double Your Impact This End of Year image

#ContinueTheWork

Our end-of-year campaign aims to raise $25,000 to support the "Built by the Ancestors" campaign and help preserve the historic Saulnier homes at 1609 and 1611 Saulnier Street in Freedmen’s Town. But we can't reach this crucial milestone without you. These homes, built in 1928 and once at risk of demolition, are part of a broader mission to protect Freedmen’s Town—Houston’s first African American community and a symbol of resilience, freedom, and progress. The restoration of these properties is critical to keeping this legacy alive and accessible for future generations.

Here's the exciting news: Your impact can go even further! Thanks to an incredibly generous dollar-for-dollar match, your donation will be doubled, helping us reach a total of $50,000 to fund restoration materials and efforts.

Why Your Gift Matters

Freedmen’s Town, known as the "Mother Ward," was built by formerly enslaved individuals who forged a thriving community of Black excellence. Today, it stands as a testament to their resilience and ingenuity.

Your contribution helps fund:

  • Restoration Materials: Supplies for historic preservation, such as bricks, wood, and fixtures.
  • Structural Repairs: Ensuring these homes can stand the test of time.
  • Community Engagement: Making these spaces accessible as living landmarks for education and inspiration.

With your support, we can preserve Freedmen’s Town’s powerful story and provide affordable housing through innovative partnerships with organizations like the Houston Community Land Trust.

Matching Gift Opportunity

For every dollar you donate, a generous donor will match your gift up to $25,000, doubling your impact. Together, we can achieve our $50,000 goal and complete this transformational project.

Your Impact:

  • $50 becomes $100: Supplies for restoring original brickwork.
  • $250 becomes $500: Materials for roofing and structural repairs.
  • $1,000 becomes $2,000: Supports plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems.

Every donation, no matter the size, plays a vital role in preserving this rich heritage.
