We Need Your Support!
The Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy is dedicated to securing the future of Houston’s one-of-a-kind heritage district, by cultivating its economic potential. We are protecting our legacy, preserving our past, educating our city, and engaging our world. Through community engagement, re-education, and the development of heritage tourism, what we're doing is triggering investment to transform Freedmen’s Town into a center of commerce and tourism and expand the recognition of its legacy to a global scale.
Freedmen’s Town is a critical part of not only Houston’s and Texas’ history, but our nation’s history. It is crucial that “stories of freedom that transpired” in this historic place be kept alive and told to generations to come. Just as the homes, churches, and parks built over 150 years ago by African Americans are part of this unique cultural attraction, we hope that our strong commitment to Freedmen's Town will inspire you to plant seeds that help us nurture future generations 150 years from now - and beyond - to support the rebirth and sustainability of Freedmen’s Town, Houston’s “Mother Ward.”
